@9000russell haha, tell that to the guys he neck tackled. Fact is, football was a very different game back then. A lot of what he did was legal for the time, but would be considered cheating today. Atkinson and Tatum are still regarded as one of the best/ most feared secondary of all time.
atkinson wasnt even that talented so he tried to make it up with cheating. he actualy sucked

Those two guys were specialists in the game of football. And, it does speak volumes that Tatum and Atkinson were targeted by Noll, but Noll wouldn’t label his own players for their actions…heck no, if the Steelers wanted to dope up, get ‘roids, that was fine. But heaven forbid if your opponent had naturally rough players with the skillset to win games.
If I had to pick a defensive player for a team, give me Tatum.

To set a couple things straight: First, in my book, ANY DB able to make a career in the NFL is a very good athlete, and Atkinson & Tatum (especially the latter) not only did that, but excelled. Secondly, though, it is not true that these guys were regarded as just ‘the norm’ back in those more lenient times, which I remember personally. Their reputation was definitely on the dirty side (sorry, Paul). Also, many of their shots were NOT legal, even back then, but were often not caught by the refs.
That was when the Raiders really were the Raiders: a bad ass team with outlaw players who won games.
